Soul Serenity Notes

Dear Reader,

What Do You Bring the Caregiver?

Recently, I visited a mentor who is recovering from a stroke.

When someone is recovering from surgery, illness, or rehabilitation, we often know what to bring: a meal, flowers, or a blanket.

But this time, I found myself wondering:

What do you bring the caregiver?

A dear friend knew exactly what my mentor’s daughter, her primary caregiver, would enjoy. So we brought something just for her, too.

This summer, I spent time on both sides of recovery: recovering from surgery myself while also helping my husband through his recovery.

It gave me a new appreciation for the small acts of care that sustain us.

I was surprised and touched when a family member sent me my favorite cheese. It was a simple reminder that someone was thinking of me.

And I found myself craving a warm chocolate chip skillet cookie.

Not because either would solve anything.

But because sometimes care is simple.

A favorite food.
An unloaded dishwasher.
A few quiet minutes with a favorite tree or even a full morning to forest bathe.
An evening immersed in a favorite sci-fi series.
A chance to rest without guilt.

While gathering ingredients for a skillet cookie to "help" my husband recover from surgery, the scientist in me couldn't help wondering what makes warm cookies feel so comforting.

Then I remembered:

I don’t need to understand the magic.
I just need to go home and bake.

Maybe support works that way, too.

We do not always need the perfect solution. Sometimes we simply need a reminder of comfort, kindness, and care.

Caregivers: when someone asks, “How can I help?” what would feel most supportive to you?

If you're caring for someone else—or carrying more than usual yourself—I hope you can make room for one small act of comfort this week.

And if you'd like a little support, I'd love to welcome you to Arrive & Rest, a complimentary community restorative yoga practice on Friday, September 11, 7:00-8:00 p.m. Eastern via Zoom.

For months, our cohort moved through rigorous online study together, including yoga philosophy, anatomy, pranayama, practice, and teaching. I already felt deeply connected to my classmates, but meeting in person at Kripalu was something special. During our week together, we became a sangha in the deepest sense. All...

May 2026 Soul Serenity Notes See full post on Instagram Dear Reader, I didn’t put my yoga mat away. I came back to find it scratched up—mat, knee pad, and even my yoga blocks. Storm, my black cat, had clearly had a full practice while I was gone. Possible interpretations: A. I didn’t stay in savasana long enough B. She practiced her own version of yoga C. “Tidy up, sistah.” Storm does like to lie on my legs during savasana…so maybe she just missed me. Her body already knows something many of...
